The Next Einstein Competition (the "Competition") is sponsored by Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University (the “Sponsor”). For the purposes of the Competition, the “Competition Group” is composed of the Sponsor, Canadian Friends of Hebrew University of Jerusalem together with its respective affiliates and related companies, including without limitation its parent, sister and subsidiary companies, retailers, franchisees, advertising and promotion agencies, suppliers of material and services related to the Competition, and any other corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship or other legal entity directly involved in the Competition and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and other representatives.
The Competition starts on March 28, 2017 at 12:00:00 am Eastern Time ("ET") and ends on April 25, 2017 at 11:59:59 pm ET (the "Competition Period"). Please note that April 25, 2017 will be the last day participants are able to submit entries until 11:59 pm ET.
You must be 13 years or older for this Competition in which you can submit your ideas.
If on the Start Date you are a "minor," meaning that you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you must obtain permission from your parent or legal guardian, and your parent or legal guardian must consent to be bound by these Rules as if he or she were an entrant, before you submit an entry. Sponsor reserves the right to require minors to submit proof of parental/guardian permission and consent to these Rules at any time, without which they may be immediately disqualified from the Competition. No purchase or payment is necessary to enter the Competition or to become a registered member of the Sponsor Site.
If a parent or legal guardian does not provide consent, or if the winner’s (or the winner’s parent, or legal guardian’s) name, mailing address, and email address, cannot be obtained, the entry will be disqualified. The contact information collected by the Sponsor with the entry will only be used to award the Competition prizes. The Sponsor will not use this personal information for any other reason and will not otherwise disclose this personal information to any other party.
The Competition is open to legal residents of Canada (including Quebec) and the United States. Excluded from eligibility are officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives of Sponsor, the Competition Group, any independent Competition judging organization, each of their respective parent, affiliated or related companies, agencies, suppliers of the materials and services related to this Competition, and members of any immediate families (defined as parents, siblings, children and spouses, regardless of where they live) or households (whether or not related) of such officers, directors, employees, agents and sales representatives.
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Internet access and valid email account required. Online entry through the Competition WebPage (as defined below) only; no other means of submission will be accepted. To enter the Competition, go online to http://thenexteinstein.com, the “Competition WebPage”) during the Competition Period and then complete the entry form (the “Entry Form”), including your first and last name, telephone number, city, date of birth, email address, individual or team submission. Minors must submit contact information for their parent or legal guardian. You will then be asked to submit your idea via essay (up to 300 words) with an optional video (120 sec) and/or and photograph “What is your idea on how to improve the world?”
All entries will be displayed on the Competition “Entries” page. Individuals and teams can submit multiple ideas.
You will also be required to confirm that you have read, understood and agree to abide by these Official Competition Rules. Once completed, click “Submit” and you will receive one (1) entry (each “Entry” or collectively, the “Entries”) into the Competition. All fields on the Entry Form must be completed unless indicated as optional. Each Entry must be submitted by the entrant him or herself or by a team; or, in the case of minors, his/her parent or legal guardian.
Create a “pitch” for your idea which will be submitted via our website. The pitch will consist of the following elements:
Entrant/team may only use one (1) email address account in connection with this Competition. Entrants 13 years old and under should use a parent’s or legal guardian’s email account. Any attempt of plagiarism is a violation of these Official Contest Rules and may result in disqualification. Use of automated devices is prohibited; automated Entries (including but not limited to Entries submitted using any robot, script, macro or other automated service) are not permitted and may result in disqualification.
The essay, photograph, and video submissions must each be a single work of original material created by the Competition entrant/team. By entering the Competition, entrant/team represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted Essay, Photograph, and Video are original works created solely by the entrant and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the Essay, Photograph, or the Video.
Videos and photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud; provided that entrants must be prepared to provide a release form as described below in “Third Party Releases/Licenses.”
If the Video or Photograph includes other people, you must be prepared to provide a signed written personal release from all persons who appear in the Video submitted, authorizing use of the Video as provided below in “Third Party Releases/Licenses.”
By participating, all entrants further grant a license in the entries to the Authorized Parties, and acknowledge that any Authorized Party may use the entries and a name credit in any media now or hereafter known, without restriction, including commercially using and exploiting the entries to fullest extent possible worldwide in perpetuity. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use or exploitation.
Upon Sponsor’s request, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed written personal release from all persons who appear in the Video or Photograph submitted, authorizing use of the Video or Photograph and Essay by any Authorized Party in any media now or hereafter known, without restriction, including commercially using and exploiting it to fullest extent possible, including but not limited to Sponsor’s editorial publications, press releases, marketing and promotions. Similarly, upon Sponsor’s request, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed written license from the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork or other copyrighted material that appears in the Video or Photograph entry, authorizing use of the Video or Photograph by any Authorized Party in any media now or hereafter known, without restriction, including commercially using and exploiting it to fullest extent possible, including but not limited to Sponsor’s editorial publications, press releases, marketing and promotions. All releases must be in the form provided by Sponsor. Failure to provide such releases upon request may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.
From May 17 – 31, 2017, all submissions will go through a review panel, then sent to the expert panel of judges (see judging tab on Competition site). Our panel of judges made up from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and celebrities will judge all submissions based on a pre-determined scoring criteria. The judges will determine the top submissions resulting in a select group of finalists.
The winner will be announced on Tuesday, June 6, 2017

“One” (1) winner will be awarded the following; A $10,000 monetary award (Canadian Funds) The Grand Prize winner understands and agrees that The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and its partners or any prize provider has the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify and remove the Winner and/or any guest(s) from any activity at any time if the Winner at any point is uncooperative, disruptive, or may or cause damage to person, property, or the reputation of The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and its Sponsors or any prize provider or otherwise violates the policies of the prize providers.
Request for refund will not be entertained. Grand Prize winners waive all recourse against The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University (CFHU) and its Sponsors if services offered do not prove to be entirely satisfactory.
The Grand Prize winner will be eligible to receive the Einstein Legacy Student Scholarship ($5,000).
Entrants being considered for the Einstein Legacy Student Scholarship as part of “The Next Einstein” competition must meet specific criteria:
Should all the above criteria be met, the winner of the Einstein Legacy Student Scholarship will be determined by a CFHU Academic Committee. The Einstein Legacy Student Scholarship has an approximate value of USD$5000. The winner will have the opportunity to receive monetary funds to put toward their tuition to study at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This scholarship is non-exchangeable, non-transferable, non-refundable, has no cash surrender value and must be accepted as awarded with no substitutions.
The Einstein Legacy Student Scholarships were created by families across Canada to honour the memory of loved ones. It was important for these families to provide funds to enable student to study at the world renowned Hebrew University.
Winners will be notified by email within approximately 24 hours on Jun 6, 2017 at the email address provided by the entrant/team during entry. Please check your email and spam filters. Before being declared a winner, each selected entrant, if resident of Canada, must first correctly answer without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question to be administered at a mutually convenient time by telephone/email. Each winner may also be required to complete and return to Sponsor (or its authorized agent) by the deadline specified in the documents a written declaration and release form (the “Release”), releasing the Competition Group from any liability in connection with this Competition or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize. Return of any prize or winner notification as undeliverable, inability to reach selected entrant or failure of selected entrant to respond to notification within three (3) days of first attempt by Sponsor or Sponsor’s agent, failure to provide proof of eligibility (if requested), Release documents, or other required documentation in a timely manner, failure to correctly answer the skill-testing question, or other non-compliance with these Official Competition Rules may result in disqualification, forfeiture of the prize and, at Sponsor’s sole discretion, selection of an alternate eligible entrant for the forfeited Prize, who will be subject to disqualification in the same manner.
(U.S. Residents Only) The value of any prize awarded to a winner that is resident in the United States may be reported by the Competition Group to the IRS for tax purposes as required by law. Each winner is solely responsible for reporting and paying any and all applicable taxes. Each winner must provide the Sponsor with valid identification and a valid taxpayer identification number or Social Security number before any prize will be awarded. Prizes are not transferable, redeemable for cash or exchangeable for any other prize. Any person winning over $600 in prizes will receive an IRS Form 1099 at the end of the calendar year and a copy of such form will be filed with the IRS.
Sponsor and its authorized agents will collect, use, and disclose the personal information you provide when you enter the Competition for the purposes of administering the Competition and prize fulfillment. By entering this Competition, you consent to such collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information. You may also be offered the opportunity to receive additional communications from Sponsor about its products, and upcoming contests and promotions. The Competition WebPage is hosted on servers in the United States, and the personal information you provide may therefore also be subject to the laws of the United States.
By accepting the grand prizes winners agree to Sponsor’s use of his/her name, city/province/state of residence, picture, biographical information, statements, voice and likeness in any advertising and publicity Sponsor may conduct relating to the Competition in any media or format, whether now known or hereafter developed, including but not limited to the World Wide Web, at any time or times in perpetuity, without further compensation or notice. Aggregate and/or anonymized Competition winner information may be used by the Sponsor to communicate about the Competition to its retailers and distributors. If, in Sponsor’s sole opinion, any factor interferes with its proper conduct as contemplated by these Official Competition Rules, Sponsor reserves the right to terminate, suspend or modify this Competition, or these Official Competition Rules, in whole or in part, at any time and without notice or obligation, subject only to the approval of the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (the “Régie”) with respect to residents of Quebec. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, if the Competition, or any part thereof, is not capable of running as planned for any reason, including but not limited to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, programming errors, or technical failures, which, in the sole opinion of Sponsor, corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Competition, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, and subject only to the approval of the Régie in Quebec, void any suspect Entries and: (a) terminate the Competition, or any portion thereof; (b) modify or suspend the Competition, or any portion thereof, to address the impairment and then resume the Competition, or relevant portion, in a manner that best conforms to the spirit of these Official Competition Rules; and/or (c) award the prize from among the eligible, non-suspect Entries received up to the time of the impairment in accordance with the winner selection criteria discussed above.
Winning the Grand Prize is contingent on fulfilling all the requirements set forth herein. All Entries become the property of Sponsor and none will be returned or acknowledged. Mass Entries, automated Entries, Entries submitted by third parties, and any Entries or prize claims that are late, incomplete, fraudulent, illegible, unidentified or delayed will be void. All Entries and prize claims are subject to verification. Proof of Entry submission does not constitute proof of receipt. Entrants agree to abide by these Official Competition Rules. Decisions of Sponsor and/or any independent competition judging organization will be final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Competition. Competition is subject to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws. Void where prohibited. Sponsor reserves the right to correct any typographical, printing, computer programming or operator errors. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any terms of these Official Competition Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Competition Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. If any provision of the Official Competition Rules is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, then the Official Competition Rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein. Should a winner make any false statement(s) in any document referenced above, the winner will be required to promptly return to Sponsor his/her prize, or the cash value thereof. Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers or attempts to tamper with the entry process, the operation of the Competition and/or Competition WebPage, violates the Official Competition Rules, or acts with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. WARNING: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS COMPETITION OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE COMPETITIONS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO PROSECUTE AND SEEK DAMAGES TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of the person who submitted any Entry, the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at entry will be deemed to be the entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an e-mail address by an access provider, service provider, or other person or organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the account associated with the submitted address. The potential winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder.
BY PARTICIPATING IN THIS COMPETITION, ENTRANTS AGREE THAT COMPETITION GROUP HAS NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR, AND SHALL BE HELD HARMLESS AGAINST, ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY INJURIES, CLAIMS, LOSSES, DAMAGES, COSTS OR EXPENSES OF ANY KIND (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES) TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY RESULTING FROM (A) ENTRY OR PARTICIPATION IN THIS CONTEST, INCLUDING ACCESS TO AND USE OF THE CONTEST WEBPAGE, (B) ANY CLAIMS BASED ON PERSONALITY OR PRIVACY RIGHTS, DEFAMATION OR PRIZE DELIVERY, OR (C) THE ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, USE OR MISUSE OF ANY PRIZE INCLUDING THE MERCHANDISE FOR WHICH IT IS REDEEMED. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, therefore such exclusions may not apply to you.
Without limiting the foregoing, the Competition Group and any of Sponsor’s other agencies, suppliers or contractors, shall not be responsible for: (a) any incomplete or inaccurate information that is caused by Competition WebPage users, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Competition, or by any technical or human error which may occur in the processing of submissions in the Competition; (b) lost, interrupted, or unavailable network, server, service provider, on-line systems, telephone networks or telephone lines, or any other connections; (c) the theft, destruction, loss or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, Entries; (d) any problems with, or malfunctions or failures of, telephone networks or lines, computers or computer on-line systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, viruses or bugs; (e) garbled transmissions or miscommunications; (f) failure of any e-mail to be received by or from the Competition judging organization or Sponsor for any reason, including but not limited to traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website or combination thereof or technical incompatibility; (g) damage to a user’s computer equipment (software or hardware) occasioned by participation, uploading or downloading of materials related to this Competition; (h) printing, distribution, programming or production errors, and any other errors or malfunctions of any kind, whether human, mechanical, electronic or otherwise; or (i) technical, pictorial, typographical or editorial errors or omissions contained herein.This Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. Facebook is completely released of all liability by each entrant in this Competition. Any questions, comments or complaints regarding the Competition must be directed to Sponsor and not Facebook.
Any litigation respecting the conduct or organization of a publicity contest may be submitted to the Régie for a ruling. Any litigation respecting the awarding of a prize may be submitted to the Régie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement.
